About In the Pink
In the Pink is an organisation
dedicated to raising awareness of holistic health, including complementary
and alternative medicines (CAM), within Manchester's LGBT community.
We hope to create a community where LGBT people are informed about different
types of therapies and have safe access to practitioners who respect
and embrace diversity.
Founded in 2009, In the Pink was
inspired by a conversation between Manchester-based homeopath, Sarah
Davies, and Tim Moorhouse, a medical herbalist, about the lack of awareness
of CAM amongst lesbians and gay men. Sarah had also just read the Stonewall
report, Prescription
for Change, which highlighted the shocking levels of stigma and
discrimination lesbians and bisexual women encounter when accessing
health care. This combination of the lack of awareness about CAM and
the harm caused by ignorant health practitioners suggested the need
for an organisation to promote a holistic approach to health and enable
the LGBT community to safely access CAM practitioners.
The membership of In the Pink includes
practitioners of many different types of CAM, including homeopaths,
herbalists, massage therapists, reiki practitioners and acupuncturists.
All practitioners either identify as LGBT or are LGBT-friendly, ensuring
that they understand and respect diversity in their client-base and
many have significant experience of treating LGBT people and the unique
health issues they encounter.
Objectives
Our mission is to inspire, guide
and support Manchester's LGBT community in exploring a holistic approach
to improving and maintaining health by:
Providing access to information
and education about the holistic health model and CAM practices
Providing safe access to CAM practitioners
who respect and understand the needs of Manchester's LGBT community
Promoting collaboration between
stakeholders within the private, statutory and voluntary sectors to
raise the profile of, and safe access to, CAM for the LGBT community
Helping LGBT and LGBT-friendly
CAM practitioners to promote their practices within their community

Creating a network of CAM practitioners

our facebook group) with a networking event planned for Summer 2010
Organising a holistic health and
CAM fair for the LGBT community
Producing resources that describes
the different types of CAM therapies available in Manchester
Having a presence at Pride
